The Arabic name جبرائيل (Jibrāīl) is made up of the elements جبر (jabr) "strong" (ultimately from Semitic root gabhar "was strong") and اله (ilāh) "God", coming together to mean "God is strong", "strength of God" or "strong [servant] of God". The shortened form, جبريل (Jibrīl), developed over time and is now the common pronunciation in many places. Djibril is a common variant transcription found primarily in Western Africa. In Islamic tradition, Jibrāīl is considered one of the chief angels of God and is associated with the revelation of the Qur'an to Prophet Muhammad.
